Can You Wear Costumes at Disneyland and Disney World Theme Parks?

Only children under the age of 13 are permitted to wear costumes at Disney theme parks. This is, for the most part, so that guests do not confuse those in costume with the actual characters who are at the parks.

Disneybounding Vs. Costume

A costume is an exact replica of the character you are dressing as and would be something to wear for Halloween. Disneybounding is a normal outfit you would wear every day that is inspired by a Disney character. It is often put together from pieces you already have in your closet.

Toy-Story-Woody-and-Buzz-Disneybound

Disneybounding is when you wear regular clothes that are inspired by a Disney character. This was created to go around the rules of wearing costumes and allows everyone to still dress up at the parks.

Belle-Disneybound

My “Peasant” Belle Disneybound. I used a white fanny pack instead of an apron and attached charms of books to the zipper.

Why Do I Love Disneybounding

Every time I disneybound, I feel that it makes the experience even more magical. My friends and I now even coordinate fun outfits for almost all of our park visits. Here are some reasons why I love Disneybounding so much.

  • Characters love to interact with park guests who are disneybounding as them.
  • You’ll get the most incredible photographs and videos.
  • It’s a fun way to coordinate with your friends.
  • It’s much more comfortable than wearing a costume.
  • It can be affordable by using clothes you already own.

How to Disneybound Like a Pro

Now I’m going to teach you the simplest way to Disneybound like a pro. Disneybounding should always be done in your own style, whether you prefer athletic apparel, cute dresses, cargo pants, etc. the possibilities are really endless.

  • First, select pieces from your wardrobe or shopping list that are the same color scheme as your favorite character.
  • Next, select accessories like bags, jewelry, pins, belts, scarves, and even jackets.
  • Then, complete the look with themed Mickey ears or a hat.
  • Finally, for some extra flair, consider an accessory that represents your character that you can take out for photos. For example, in my Lightning McQueen disbound above, I brought a cheap checkered flag I found on Amazon for $3 to the park with me to use in photos. It really made them extra cute.
  • For even more Disneybounding cuteness, you can also wear a shoulder plush.

How to Select the Best Disneybounding Accessories

Your accessories do not need to be official Disney merchandise. For example, in my Pinocchio Disneybound shown above, I found this cute whale purse on Amazon, and it was the highlight of my outfit. These accessories are great because they allow other park guests to instantly know who you are portraying.

I also bought a yellow hat and accented it with blue ribbon, a red feather, and magnetic Mickey ears. I add all the little extras with a simple hot glue gun.

I will often make a list of unique items that represent the character I’m planning to Disneybound as, then do a search on amazing for necklaces, earrings, and bags that match.

Where to Find Cheap Disneybounding Clothing & Accessories

If I’m searching for things I don’t already own, I check sites like Amazon, Temu, Shein, Target, Khols, and Walmart. Both Target and Kohl’s sell official Disney merchandise that is cute and much cheaper than what you’d find at the parks. I also have a Rent the Runway subscription and have an album created for Disneybounding ideas. Below is my amazing amazon list where you can find all the items I’ve purchased for my own Disneybounds over the years and ones I’ve saved for future visits.

My Chewbacca Disneybound is still one of my all-time favorites. This was for Star Wars Night, a special ticketed after-hours event at Disneyland California.

Disneybounding Outfit Ideas for Adults

Here are examples of some fun Disneybounding outfit ideas for adults.

  • Classic Characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy. Example for Daisy Duck: a lavender top with a ruffled white skirt, pink sneakers or flip flops, a pink hair bow headband, accessorized with pink heart-shaped sunglasses.
  • Disney Princesses like Jasmine, Cinderella, Belle, Snow White, Rapunzel, and Ariel. Example for Snow White: Yellow skirt or pants, a dark or light blue top, a red jacket, an apple shaped bag, necklace, or earrings.
  • Disney Villains like Cruella, Maleficent, The Evil Queen, Captain Hook, and Queen of Hearts. Example for Captain Hook: I paired a magenta skirt with a white peasant top, and a time clock purse with a crocodile plush toy attached. I also embellished my ears by adding a big white feather and a pirate’s sword to the front.
  • Pixar Characters like Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Inside Out, Monsters Inc., and Up. Example for Woody: Jean shorts with a yellow tank top, Woody-themed ears, a cow print pattern belt, cow print bag, and brown boots.
  • Star Wars Characters: Ren, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan, Grogu, Princess Leia

Peter Pan Kids Disneybound Outfit

The Peter Pan Kids Disneybound I put together for my nephew. We lucked out with this adorable photo-op they had at Disneyland with Peter Pan’s shadow.

Disneybounding Outfit Ideas for Kids

Your child likely has a favorite Disney character they want to dress up as, and they are usually very traditional characters. While kids can still wear costumes, it is sometimes even more fun and creative to put them in a Disneybound. A great example of this is the time I Disneybounded my nephew as Peter Pan!

  • Disneybounding outfits for little girls: Minnie Mouse and all the princesses like Jasmine, Belle, Snow White, Rapunzel, Elsa, Moana and Cinderella.
  • Disneybounding outfit ideas for little boys: Peter Pan, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Lightning McQueen, Aladdin, Pirates of the Caribbean, Nemo. Example for Peter Pan: When I dressed my nephew as Peter Pan, my idea was to do a 1920s theme. I ordered him green pants with a more lime green dress shirt, suspenders, and a newsboy cap, which I glued a red feather to the hat.

Peter-Pan-Family-Disneybound-Outfits

My friend’s daughter wanted to do a Peter Pan Disneybound for her birthday. I did a Captain Hook Disneybound, and her dad was the sidekick and did a Smee Disneybound. I wore a magenta tennis skirt, a peasant top, with a red off-the-shoulder top underneath. Accenting the outfit was a clock purse, and I attached a little crocodile plush. For the ears, I embellished them with a big white feather and attached a pirate’s sword to the center of the bow.

Disneybounding Outfit Ideas for Families, Couples, and Friends

I love doing group Disneybounds and seeing what everyone comes up with. Trust me, this makes going to Disneyland or Disney World so much fun when you all dress up in a theme. Below are some of my favorite themes you can do in groups.

  • Toy Story: Woody, Buzz, Sally, Bo Peep, Alien
  • Lilo & Stich: Lilo, Stitch, Scrump, Pleakley
  • Beauty and the Beast: Belle, Beast, Teacup, Teapot, Feather Duster, Candle Stick
  • Inside Out Emotions
  • Prince & Princess
  • Princess & Evil Queen
  • Remy & Chef
  • Alice in Wonderland: Alice, Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, Queen of Hearts
  • Peter Pan: Peter, Wendy, Hook, Tinker Bell, Mr. Smee, Lost Boys, Tiger Lily

My Grogu Disneybound in the winter. I found this sweater on Shein that looks just like the one worn by Grogu!

How to Disneybound in the Winter

A common question I always see people ask in the Disneybounding facebook groups is how to Disneybound in the winter. This is actually one of my favorite times to disneybound.

  • Jackets: Many of the characters wear capes and jackets. Select a big jacket in the theme of your character, like a long red jacket for snow white, a magenta jacket for Captain Hook, or a cow print jacket for Woody and Sally.
  • Boots: Disneybounding in the winter is great because many of the characters already wear boots. I’ve worn my flat boots with 15-20k steps quite comfortably.
  • Scarves, Gloves, and Hats: I always add a pop of color with a scarf, gloves, and often even a hat that matches the character. In fact, one year I went to Sweethearts Night and secretly Disneybouned my fiancé without him knowing by having him dress in his blue slacks, a white button-up, and a red scarf. Can you guess which Prince he was?
  • Practice Your Poses: Whenever we disneybound as a character, we Google pictures of them and see if they have any signature poses, then mimic them in the pictures. The characters are also great and will often show them to you.
  • Coordinate your poses before your photos if you want to try something fun.
  • Don’t look at the camera. The best pictures often look natural, like looking at each other, laughing, or looking in the distance. Try not to take every picture as a typical photo, looking straight at the camera.

Lili and Stitch Group Disneybound

For our Lili & Stitch Disneybound we waited in line at Frontierland and waited for a private photographer who did a 15-minute photoshoot next to the Jungle Cruise ride and Tiki area. I brought fun photo props for our shoot.

Disneybounding Tips for Instagram-Worthy Photos

Here are some tips for capturing the most Instagram-worthy photos on your next trip.

  • Check the Disneyland App to see what time character interactions will be and arrive right when the previous character ends. There is only about a 10-minute wait until the next character arrives.
  • If you have a Disneyland Visa Card you’ll receive private character interactions in both parks. Disneyland is Darth Vader and Disney California Adventure is Minnie Mouse, Pluto, and Stitch.
  • Throughout the entire park, there are professional photographers waiting to take your picture. If you purchase the Lightning Lane pass, it includes unlimited photo opportunities. There is often no wait at all except for right in front of the castle.
  • On the right side of the bridge entering Disneyland’s Frontier Land, you can line up for a private photo shoot, which is completely free with the Lightning Lane pass. Your own private photographer will let you choose what area of the park you would like to shoot in and will spend about 15-20 minutes with you. You’ll likely wait in line for about 30-45 minutes, but it’s totally worth it if you want amazing pictures.
  • Edit your photos in Lightroom: If you’re wondering why the colors really pop on all my photos, it’s from adding a Disney Filter, which I purchased years ago on Etsy.
  • Bring Props: We have brought so many props, include the cute props you use for photo booths and they always give us the best photos!

Common Disneybounding Mistakes to Avoid

Here are some very common disneybounding mistakes I see all the time that you’ll want to avoid.

  1. Wearing a costume: This is not a Disneybound. You can be denied entry into the park or asked to change if your found wearing a costume in the park.
  2. Not adding thoughtful accessories: I cannot tell you how many people throw on a random color scheme, some ears, and then call it a Disneybound. People should instantly know who you are Disneybounding as based on the various accessories that represent your character.
  3. Wearing uncomfortable shoes: Trust me, just wear sneakers or comfortable shoes with your Disneybound. If you want to bring fancy shoes for a few special photos, put them in your backpack and then store them in a locker afterward. I actually did this for my very first Disneybound at WDW.
  4. Dress for the weather: If it’s cold, you can Disneybound as your character wearing pants. It actually makes your Disneybound more creative and unique rather than awkward and uncomfortable. Rain in the forecast? Consider Disneybounding as Jiminy Cricket, who already carries an umbrella!
