Our ship arrived in Cabo an hour behind schedule, and after waiting another 40 minutes for the tender boats to ferry us ashore, we were running nearly two hours late. I was heartbroken, thinking my camel dreams were over before they began.
Luckily, the team at Shore Excursions Group worked some serious magic. They stayed in constant contact with Wild Canyon Adventures, the local operator, who somehow managed to arrange a private transfer for us. Our guide explained that the camels were rescued from former circuses and are now thriving in this sanctuary environment. Each was well-fed, relaxed, and had a distinct personality.
After suiting up in our (admittedly not-so-sexy) helmets, my fiancé and I climbed aboard our camel. With only three others in our group, the experience felt private and serene. We ambled through quiet desert trails surrounded by cacti and desert sand, an unexpected peace that made the whole experience feel so relaxing.

The Camel Meet & Greet
After the ride, we were invited to a shaded area for a special meet-and-greet. Each guest took turns feeding, petting, and even getting a “kiss” from one of the camels. The guides encouraged us to take as many photos and videos as we wanted, a major plus, since many excursions prohibit personal photography.
And yes, I volunteered to go first for the infamous “camel French kiss.” I gave the command “Besame, Sarita,” and then placed a carrot between my lips. Margaritas, Quesadillas, and a Desert Farewell
At the end of the tour, the staff offered freshly made quesadillas and icy margaritas. Since we had a dinner reservation back on the ship, we skipped the food, but gratefully accepted the margaritas to go.
