Best Things to Do in Roatán, Honduras on a Cruise, My Favorite Caribbean Port

Roatán, Honduras is one of the best cruise ports in the Western Caribbean, especially if you love adventure and want to make the most of your time on shore. What makes Roatán stand out is how easy it is to fit multiple excursions into a single port day without feeling rushed or overpaying for short experiences.

On many Caribbean cruises, you might spend $100 to $200 on just one activity. In Roatán, you can bundle several unforgettable experiences into one seamless day and still be back on the ship with time to spare. During my cruise, I managed four excursions, including two first-time experiences, and returned in time to shower before dinner.

If you are looking for the best things to do in Roatán, Honduras on a cruise, this guide walks through exactly how I planned my day and why it’s my favorite port in the Caribbean.

Planning a Full Day of Shore Excursions in Roatán

I booked my excursions through Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout after seeing it consistently recommended in cruise Facebook groups. Their website allows you to mix and match activities, which makes it easy to create a personalized itinerary based on how adventurous or relaxed you want your day to be.

For $160, I combined four activities into one coordinated experience with transportation included. Everything ran on schedule, and the locations were close enough that travel time between activities was minimal.

Roatán Cruise Tip: One of the biggest advantages of Roatán is proximity. Most popular excursions are within a short drive of the cruise port, making it ideal for stacking activities.

After getting off the ship, I met the Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout team just outside the cruise port. A small group of us boarded a minivan and headed to the animal sanctuary, which was only a short drive away.

Once there, our guide introduced us to several sloths and explained how the sanctuary works. We were able to take so many photos with these adorable creatures, which was so amazing.

The highlight was the monkey area. Small monkeys wandered freely, climbing onto shoulders, sitting on heads, and interacting naturally with visitors. They are so fun and playful, and it was definitely one of my favorite moments of the day.

“Having monkeys casually climb onto my shoulders and sit on my head was one of those travel experiences you never forget.”

Horseback Riding Through the Jungle and Into the Ocean

After leaving the sanctuary, I was driven to an adventure park near the cruise port for horseback riding. I was the only rider scheduled at that time, which meant I had a private guide and a completely personalized experience.

We rode along jungle trails before emerging onto a quiet beach. Unlike many horseback riding excursions that feel rushed, this one lasted well over an hour. My guide regularly stopped to take photos and videos using my phone, which made a huge difference in capturing the experience.

The most memorable part was riding the horses directly into the ocean. We spent about 15 to 20 minutes riding in the water before heading back along a sandy path near the shore.

Horseback Riding Tip: Wear water shoes. Riding into the ocean is part of the experience and one of the best parts. Your shoes will be fully submerged. These water shoes are amazing and can be worn all day just like sneakers.

Next, I moved on to ATV riding, a first-time experience for me. Once again, I was the only participant, which allowed the guide to go at my pace.

The guide took time to explain everything before we started, and then we took off on our ATV adventure. I was a little timid at first, but within a few minutes, I felt comfortable navigating jungle paths and splashing through puddles. There was even a designated photo spot where the guide took photos and videos of me riding through a tunnel.

We eventually made our way to a secluded beach where I rode the ATV with the ocean as the backdrop. The entire experience lasted about 45 minutes, and I returned muddy, smiling, and completely hooked. I have seriously been missing out and plan to do way more ATV excursions on future cruises!

Zipling-Excursion-in-Roatan

Ziplining Above the Roatán Jungle

For the final activity of the day, I had another first-time experience and went ziplining. For this portion, I was joined by only three other guests. After being fitted with harnesses, we rode in the back of a truck up through the jungle, which felt like an adventure on its own.

At the top, the guides walked us through safety instructions and provided thick leather gloves we used to slow us down at the end of each line. We completed four different zipline courses, soaring high above the jungle canopy.

While it was slightly nerve-racking at first, it quickly became one of the most exhilarating experiences of the day. The views alone made it worth it, and I would absolutely zipline again.

Pro-Tip: The couple I was ziplining with were able to do a zipline together at the same time. A fun experience for couples!

How I Fit Four Excursions Into One Cruise Port Day

I got off the ship around 11:00 a.m. and finished all activities by approximately 4:00 p.m. I was genuinely impressed by how much I was able to do without feeling rushed.

Roatán’s layout makes it one of the easiest cruise ports to maximize your time, even if you want to combine adventure with relaxation.

Time-Saving Tip: Booking bundled excursions in Roatán allows you to experience more without constantly watching the clock.

Other Things to Do Near the Roatán Cruise Port

If I had not had an early dinner reservation, I easily could have added snorkeling or beach time. Right next to the cruise ship, there are gondolas you can take for about $12. These sky chairs transport you to a beautiful beach area with calm water and plenty of activities.

At the beach, you can rent snorkeling gear, paddle boats, water bikes, and more. There is also a restaurant where you can grab food and drinks, making it an easy option for a more relaxed port day.
